Club Meeting & Auction – May 10, 2011

The Old Capitol Coin Club May 2011 meeting will be our annual auction on the 10th. The auction will take place at the Hills Community Center on Main Street in Hills, Iowa, 10 miles south of Iowa City on Highway 218, exit 85. Coins, currency, tokens and coin related items will be auctioned. The public is welcome. Viewing begins at 6 p.m., the auction begins at 7 p.m.

Spring Token Collectors’ Breakfast

The Spring Token Collectors Breakfast will be Saturday, April 23, 2011 at Colony Village Restaurant Williamsburg, IA, Exit 225 on I-80.

There will be the usual all-you-can-eat three meat breakfast served family style at 9:30am, come early and gab with us for a while.

The price is $13.50, including tax and tip.

Come, bring your tokens and medals, and bring a new friend to the hobby.

The topic will be peace dollars given by Barry Anderson.  The club meets at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, Highway 6 West, at 7 p.m on the 3rd floor. A door prize will be awarded and raffle tickets can be purchased.  The public is welcome.

Numismatic items will be for sale on the club’s bid board, in silent auction style.  Items are placed by club members.

Club Meeting – February 8, 2011

The next Old Capitol Coin Club meeting, February 8, 2011, the topic will be elongated coins and “Hobo” nickels. “Hobo” nickels were made by traveling “bums” in the 30’s and 40’s and traded for food.  Newer versions are crafted by various artists.  Elongated coins are “smashed” by a machine and embossed as souvenirs.

The club meets at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, Highway 6 West, at 7 p.m in the 3rd floor cafeteria.

The August 10 OCCC meeting will be member Jeff Morgan discussing counterfeit coins. The meeting is at the Veterans Medical Center in Iowa City, third floor cafeteria at 7:30 pm.

Club Meeting – June 8, 2010

The topic of the June 8, 2010 OCCC meeting will be about PCGS experiences. PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Services) www.pcgs.com is a company that grades coins when people send them in.

There will be no regular meeting at the VA in July.
